What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and practical support to families during the first few weeks or months after the birth of a baby. Their role is to help new parents adjust to their new role, provide education on newborn care and feeding, and assist with household tasks related to the baby's care. They provide non-judgmental, evidence-based support and encouragement to help families feel confident and empowered during this transitional period. Some of the tasks a postpartum doula can help with include cleaning, organizing, cooking, and laundry, so that parents can focus on bonding with their new baby and taking care of themselves. Whether it's answering questions, providing guidance, or simply offering a listening ear, a postpartum doula is there to help families navigate the challenges and joys of early parenthood.

My Approach and Goal as a Postpartum Doula:

A postpartum doula's goal is to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to families during the postpartum period, which typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months after the birth of a baby. The doula's main focus is on the well-being of the new mother and her family, with the aim of helping them adjust to the challenges and joys of having a new baby in the household. The postpartum doula's role includes assisting with newborn care, providing feeding support, helping with household chores and errands, and providing emotional support and guidance to new parents as they navigate the physical and emotional challenges of the postpartum period. Additionally, a postpartum doula provides families with community resources so they can connect with other families who are going through similar experiences. Ensuring they have access to the resources available to them. As a doula, my approach is grounded in the latest evidence-based research and informed by a commitment to impartiality and respect for each family's unique needs and values. I believe deeply in the power of community support during the postpartum period, and I am dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing space for families to thrive. With a calm and compassionate presence, I strive to empower new parents with the knowledge and tools they need to confidently care for their baby. Whether it's providing assistance with newborn care, lending a listening ear, or helping with household tasks, I am here to offer unbiased, non judgmental support that is tailored to each family's specific needs. My goal is to help families navigate the transition to parenthood with grace and confidence, and to create a lasting foundation for a happy and healthy family life.

What a postpartum doula does not do

  • A Postpartum Doula does not offer medical advice, diagnose or provide medical care in any form. However she should be knowledgeable about medical procedures that pertain to mother and baby, but should know when to refer out when the care needed is beyond her scope of practice.
  • A Postpartum Doula does not offer deep cleaning services
  • A Postpartum Doula does not speak for the family or make decisions for the parents
  • A Postpartum Doula does not babysit or offer nanny services but will have nannies and babysitters to refer your way.
  • A Postpartum Doula does not give her personal opinion but follows evidence based practices.
  • A Postpartum Doula does not impose her beliefs on you
